A total of 7 PhD students have been funded for three years; along with the project leaders and their international partners, they will develop key findings about the linguistic properties of this ubiquitous form of communication in Switzerland. • 24th/25th February 2012, workshop on "Negation and Clitics in Romance" (Link)

  • 8th/9th October 2010, workshop on "Mismatches" for NEREUS network members at the Romance Department of the University of Zurich:

“Mismatches" can be considered as linguistic features that do not seem to fit together at different levels of structuring. The most famous case is probably the Latin deponents with an active meaning, but passive morphology (eg. loqui, 'to speak', not 'to be spoken'). In the Ibero-Romance languages, we observe that semantic features, which are relevant for certain types of object marking such as animacy for the specific case marker a in Spanish, are not essential in some cases; for example, with inanimate objects (un adjetivo califica a un sustantivo), one finds a "mismatch" between semantic features and morphosyntactic realization.

The two-day workshop brought together both established researchers and young professionals belonging to the NEREUS network (http://www.ilg.uni-stuttgart.de/Nereus) to discuss the Romance languages and their older language stages. Researchers came from the U.S., Spain, Romania and Germany.
