  • June 2, 2022: Elisabeth Stark gives a keynote lecture "Du message SMS au message WhatsApp: L'omission du sujet en 'diachronie courte' de la communication électronique mobile" at the Colloque international DIACHRO X – Le français en diachronie (PDF, 1 MB), Université Sorbonne (Paris), 31 May - 2 June 2022.

  • The SINERGIA  project «MULTICAST A MULTIdisCiplinary Approach to prediction and treatment of Suicidality», in which Elisabeth Stark is a project partner, was approved by the SNSF in December 2021.
    PIs are Birgit Kleim (UZH MeF/PhF), Sebastian Olbrich (UZH, MeF), Guido Seiler (PhF), Katharina Schultebraucks (Columbia University Data Science Institute); the funding amount is 3'143'164 CHF.

  • The flagship project  "STRESS", in which the chair of Elisabeth Stark is involved as an associated research group, was approved in November 2021 by the Hochschulmedizin Zürich (HMZ).

  • Dr David Paul Gerards' dissertation on "Bare Partitives in Old Spanish and Old Portuguese", co-supervised by Elisabeth Stark, was awarded the prestigious Elise-Richter-Prize at the XXXVII Romanistentag in Augsburg (4-7 October 2021) after having previously been awarded the Faculty Prize of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of Zurich.

  • December 2020: A UZH-HU collaborative project headed by Artemis Alexiadou (HU Berlin), Marianne Hundt and Elisabeth Stark (UZH) was newly approved: 'Indefinite definite articles in Romance and English' (IDARoE)

  • In the context of the "Initiative Geisteswissenschaften", a video of an interview with Elisabeth Stark has been published: Vom Verständnis für Sprache(n).

  • By July 2020, Elisabeth Stark has been elected as a liaison professor ("Vertrauensdozent") for the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Germany's largest, oldest and most prestigious scholarship foundation). In this role, she mentors approximately 15 scholarship holders studying at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.

  • The Swiss WhatsApp corpus is online, available as open access resource and with more than 5 mio tokens in all four national languages of Switzerland, the only WhatsApp corpus of this kind. Please find the documentation and access to the corpus here.

Winter term 1993/1994: Masters degree in Romance Linguistics (Subject: "Mehrfache Herausstellungen nach links im Französischen". supervisor: Prof. Wolf-Dieter Stempel).

Summer term 1996: PhD in Romance Linguistics (Subject: "Voranstellungsstrukturen und topic-Markierung im Französischen mit einem Ausblick auf das Italienische", supervisor: Prof. Wolf-Dieter Stempel).

April 1994-1998: Researcher at the Department of Romance Linguistics at the University of Munich.

1998-2003: Research Assistant 

Summer 2003: "Habilitation" (post-doctoral research) in Romance linguistics, granting authorization to teach Romance Philology (thesis: "Indefinitheit und Textkohärenz in alttoskanischen Texten")

  • Morphosyntax of nominal expressions and its typological implications in Romance
  • Language Change: Grammaticalization and reanalysis

  • Spoken language description and problems of varieties and registers; language use in the new media (cf. http://www.sms4science.ch/).
  • Syntax and syntactic theories: Word order and information structure, agreement phenomena within nominal expressions in synchrony and diachrony, syntax theories and their application to Romance languages

  • 28.06.2011, the Swiss National Science Foundation awarded a CHF 1.7 million grant over three years to run a Sinergia project: "SMS communication in Switzerland: Facets of linguistic variation in a multilingual country". Main applicant: Elisabeth Stark (University of Zurich). Co-applicants: Christa Dürscheid, Matthias Grunert (UZH); Marie-José Béguelin, Simona Pekarek Doehler (Université de Neuchâtel); Bruno Moretti (University of Bern); Beat Siebenhaar (University of Leipzig). This grant allows us to carry out research on the grammatical properties of Swiss SMS, the linguistic structure of SMS in the dialects of Switzerland, and an exploration of code switching in Swiss SMS. A total of 7 PhD students have been funded for three years; along with the project leaders and their international partners, they will develop key findings about the linguistic properties of this ubiquitous form of communication in Switzerland.
