Johannes Kabatek, born in 1965 in Stuttgart/Germany. Studies of Romance Philology, Political Science and Musicology at Tübingen University and at the University of Málaga (Spain). 1991 MPhil; 1995 PhD at Tübingen (with a thesis on Language contact in Northwest Spain). Between 1993 and 1998, Assistant Prof. at the University of Paderborn (Germany), 1998-1999 Assistant Professor at Tübingen; 2000-2001 full Prof (substitute) at the University of Erfurt; 2001-2004 full Professor (chair) at the University of Freiburg (Germany); 2004-2013 full professor (chair) at Tübingen University; since September 2013 professor for Ibero-Romance linguistics at the University of Zurich. Visiting professorships in the US, in Brazil, Chile and in Spain; Corresponding member of the Royal Galician and the Royal Spanish Academy. Dr. h.c. University of Suceava (2016). 

 

Foundation president of the International Federation of Associations of Catalanists (FIAC) 2006-2009; President of the German Association of Catalanists 2006-2010; President of the German Association of Hispanists 2011-2015, President of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (since 2020-2021). Editor-in-Chief of the Revista Internacional de Lingüística Iberoamericana. Editor-in-Chief of the online-journal  Energeia.

 

Research areas: Romance linguistics (French, Ibero-Romance Languages); Language contact, minority languages, Medieval Spanish; Galician, Catalan; Brazilian Portuguese; Historical Linguistics; Historical syntax, spoken and written language.
